Pain And suffering of life – worth it?
Pain And suffering of life – worth it?
Life in its
natural state—driven by ego and self-interest—is full of suffering. The
Kabbalists state that the pain a person endures in a lifetime outweighs their
fleeting moments of pleasure a hundredfold.
"If
one were to calculate the agony, suffering, and exertion that people undergo to
attain some pleasure during their seventy years of life, they would find that
the pain far outweighs the pleasure. Indeed, if people knew the real balance,
they would refuse to be born."
If
existence were merely about individual gratification, then life would be a
cruel joke—a constant chase after fleeting moments of joy that vanish like
mist. But Kabbalah reveals a hidden layer of reality: happiness does not come
through personal fulfilment but through a shift in perception. When we seek fulfilment
for ourselves, we remain trapped in an endless cycle of desire and lack stuck
in the ego which promises everything and delivers nothing. Yet when we strive
for the happiness of all, we break free from the prison of self and enter a
higher state—one of true joy, boundless and eternal.
The
suffering we experience is not without purpose. It pushes us to seek something
greater, to realize that no individual pleasure will ever satisfy us
completely. True happiness is found in unity, in bestowal, in rising above our
separateness. The only way to escape
suffering is to align ourselves with the force that governs all life ‘the force
of giving, of love’. As it is written:
"Man’s
thoughts are not as the Creator’s thoughts. The Creator wishes to give him
delight and pleasure, but man must first prepare his vessels to receive
it."
Thus, life
is worth the suffering—not because of the small pleasures we gather along the
way, but because suffering itself is the tool that turns us toward something
higher. It compels us to rise above the self and discover joy in connection, in
bestowal, in becoming like the Creator Himself.
